The City Classic was a one-day slow pitch baseball tournament and BBQ organized through our Variable Community stream. We brought together five teams for a fun day of competition and good food at Greenwood Park to celebrate the end of summer.

Who Joined:

  • Ages ranged from 18 to 30 (average ~25)
  • 45 participants total
  • Neighbourhoods:  Regent Park, Esplanade, Lawrence Heights, North York, Scarborough, Malvern, Flemingdon Park, and others

Background & Experience:

  • Many participants were new to baseball tournaments (never played before or only in high school)
  • Some had prior experience in leagues/tournaments such as Healing As One, Salam Cup, and Varsity teams
  • Education levels varied: high school students, college diploma holders, and many in undergraduate or graduate studies

What They Wanted:

  • To have fun and enjoy the tournament atmosphere
  • Play with friends and strengthen community ties
  • Meet new people and expand their network
  • Focus on personal health and staying active
  • Compete for the win 🏆

Representation:

  • Diverse mix of young adults from across Toronto’s downtown east and surrounding areas
  • Participants included undergraduates, graduates, and community members not currently in school
  • Balanced mix of competitive players and those joining for fun, social connection, and health

  • Strengthened community bonds through team sports
  • Provided a full-day outdoor experience for all ages
  • Celebrated the summer with food and music

  • Gave players a chance to compete in a fun, low-pressure setting
