Web Champs is our 6-week intro to web development, where participants learned to build websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We used sports as a way to make coding fun and relatable, and everyone walked away with a personal player profile and digital scoreboard.

Who Joined:

• Average age: 18 (high school seniors + first-year post-secondary)
• 8 participants
• Neighbourhoods: Regent Park, Moss Park, and St. James Town.

Background & Experience:

• 5 had no prior web development courses; 3 had some (ITM 207, Variable Academy, Black Boys Code, VA Coding)
• Most rated their knowledge 2–4/10 (beginner to low-intermediate)
• Coding languages: Python (4), JavaScript (1), HTML (1), None (2)

What They Wanted:

• Build websites and understand coding fundamentals
• Gain experience and practical skills in web development
• Strengthen knowledge in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Explore coding as a future career option
