Abdirahman founded Variable Academy in the summer of 2023 and has led the organization’s growth and programming since its inception. He works closely with the team to design and deliver youth-focused workshops in coding and electronics, while also coordinating community events that strengthen engagement and visibility. As Executive Director, he oversees program planning, curriculum development, partnerships, and communications. He also manages the organization’s website and ensures the smooth day-to-day operation of all programs. In addition to leading strategy, Abdirahman serves as the primary instructor for the Web Champs coding program, where he supports youth through hands-on learning and mentorship. His leadership is grounded in lived experience, and his commitment to creating real pathways in tech for underserved youth is at the core of every initiative he leads.
Abdirahman grew up in downtown east Toronto and continues to serve the same community through youth workshops and community events. As a young person, he didn’t see many role models in the tech industry who looked like him or came from similar backgrounds. Despite his passion for coding and electronics, he struggled to find a pathway into the field. That experience inspired him to create Variable Academy, an initiative designed to help youth like him discover their potential through engaging, hands-on learning. His background directly shapes how we build our programs, using sports references, mentorship, and culturally relevant teaching styles that actually connect with youth in our community. Abdirahman understands what it feels like to be excited about something few others around you understand, and he’s made it his mission to create spaces where youth can express their creativity, feel supported, and confidently enter the workforce with refined skills.
